Something Like “qwertyuiop”

In 1971, computer engineer Ray Tomlinson sent the very first email. The message was transmitted using the Advanced Research Project Agency Network (ARPANET), which was among the precursors of the Internet today.

This electronic letter wasn’t directed to someone overseas or another city. Rather, it was received by another computer which was in the same room as he was. The content? Tomlinson said that it was quite forgettable and banal. He couldn’t even remember it, but he said it was along the lines of “qwertyuiop.”

It was also Tomlinson who thought of using the “@” symbol to separate the username from the domain name. He chose it because he believed that it was the least used among the characters readily available on the computer keyboard.

  • 8 AM to 10 AM – Office workers arrive at their workplace around these hours, and the first thing that they’ll do is most likely log in to their email accounts.
  • 8 PM to 10 PM – Some people browse through their messages before they sleep.
